Sugar Scrub Recipe: Ready in 15 Minutes

By Skincare editorial team · Updated

A sugar scrub is sugar suspended in oil and butter, and the whole recipe fits in one bowl. This one, Soft Sugar Body Scrub, takes about 15 minutes and makes roughly 120 g from a 100 g formula. The ingredients are written in percentages, so a bigger jar is a matter of multiplying.

The formula (100 g)

IngredientINCI%100 g batch
Fine sugarSucrose5555 g
Sunflower oilHelianthus Annuus Seed Oil2828 g
Shea butterButyrospermum Parkii Butter1515 g
Vitamin ETocopherol11 g

If you skip the essential oil, add the 1 g to the sunflower oil so the formula still totals 100 %.

Method

  1. Sanitise a jar and let it dry completely.
  2. Melt the shea butter gently, then mix it with the sunflower oil and vitamin E.
  3. Let the mix cool until it is just warm, then stir in the essential oil (if using).
  4. Fold in the sugar and spoon it into the jar.

How long does a sugar scrub last?

The recipe's planned shelf life is 6 months, in line with the 3 to 6 months listed for scrubs and polishes in the formulary. Three things decide whether yours gets there:

Throw it away if it smells like paint or crayons, if it shows spots, or if it smells sour. The full table of shelf lives is in how long homemade skincare lasts.

Frequently asked questions

How long do homemade sugar scrubs last?

This recipe has a planned shelf life of 6 months, and the formulary lists 3 to 6 months for other scrubs. Keep water out of the jar, use a clean dry spoon and throw it away if you see spots or smell something sour.

Does a sugar scrub need a preservative?

A scrub made only from sugar, oil and butter has no water, so it does not need a water-type preservative. Vitamin E helps slow rancidity of the oils. If water gets in, the situation changes, which is why the jar must stay dry.

Can I use a body scrub on my face?

This recipe is written for the body, and the formulary says to avoid the face with this scrub. Facial skin is more reactive, and coarse grit is not meant for it.

Can I use brown sugar?

Yes. Brown sugar gives a softer grit. Mango butter can also replace shea.
