Bath Bomb Recipe: A 200 g Batch (About 4 Bombs)

By Skincare editorial team · Updated

A bath bomb is baking soda and citric acid held in a shape. When they meet water, they fizz. The craft is keeping them from meeting until the bath. That means dry ingredients, a thin stream of liquid, firm packing and a dry day. This is the Classic Fizzy Bath Bomb formula, written for a 200 g batch that makes about four bombs of 50 g.

The formula (200 g, about 45 minutes)

Total100200 g

If you skip the essential oil, add its 2 g to the cornstarch to keep the total at 100 %. You also need bath bomb moulds, a whisk, a sifter and a rack.

Method

  1. Sift all the dry ingredients together twice to remove lumps.
  2. Whisk the almond oil, polysorbate 80 and optional essential oil together in a separate bowl.
  3. Pour the liquid into the dry mix in a thin stream while whisking fast so it does not fizz.
  4. Pack the mix firmly into the mould halves, press them together and unmould after 2 hours.
  5. Dry on a rack for 24 hours, then store in a dry, airtight container or shrink wrap.

How long do bath bombs last?

The planned shelf life is 3 to 6 months, kept dry. Humidity is the enemy. Citric acid and baking soda react with any moisture in the air, so an open dish in the bathroom shortens their life quickly.

Safety

Maximums for each product type are in the essential oil dilution chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is the shelf life of bath bombs?

This formula has a planned shelf life of 3 to 6 months, as long as it is kept dry. Humidity is what ruins bath bombs, so store them in an airtight container or shrink wrap.

Why is my bath bomb mix crumbly?

The mix is too dry to hold a shape. The formulary suggests one or two sprays of witch hazel, then testing a small handful by pressing it.

Why do I need polysorbate 80?

It disperses the oil in the water so you avoid oil rings and colour stains on the tub. You still need to wipe the tub after every use, because oils make the surface slippery.

Why did my bath bomb fizz while I was mixing?

The liquid went in too fast. Pour the wet mix into the dry mix in a thin stream while whisking fast so the baking soda and citric acid do not react early.
